Since I am going to be selling my T40p
before I buy another Powerbook, I need to backup all my data.
I decided to copy my data to the existing Powerbook and use
the Superdrive to create backup DVDs.
To get the two machines to talk I used the
cabled ethernet ports on each machine, both the T40p and
Powerbook 17" have gigabit ethernet ports. I gave both
machines a static IP address and had to disable the wireless
network on the Thinkpad's WindowsXP OS. I am not sure why I
had to do this, but the ethernet would not work until I had
turned off the wireless. This was not a problem on the
Powerbook. I did try to enable the wireless on the Thinkpad
later, while the ethernet was still active, and didn't have
any problems then. Strange.
I had never experienced such network speeds before: both machines have Gigabit Ethernet.
I copied "some" of my data to the Powerbook, 3.55GB, dragged the
files from the desktop (yes, they were in a folder) to the DVD
icon and waited. I dragged my files to the disc at
23:10 and the first part of the process (I assume an
image is created first) finished at 23:55.
I then selected the burn option from the right-click menu
of the DVD icon on the desktop. The burning part of the
process finished at 24:19, then the verification finished at
24:39. Very simple process.
I did not run any other applications while the disc was
being created, I did not want to interrupt anything in any
way.
Some things I noticed:
- The drive exhibited some low-level "rattling" noises
during verification.
- The mac did not show any heat issues during the burning
process on any part of the computer base.
I have no dvd burner connected to a windows machine to
compare this to.
At the end of this 1.5 hour process I had a working DVD
containing about 3.55GB of my data. Another 5 discs to go! I
copied another 9GB to the Powerbook using the gigabit
connection, and the rest will come from an external USB2
drive. The sooner I complete this the sooner I get my 15"
Powerbook 1.5Ghz!
