Day 3, Monday: Application Switcher.

12 April 2004

Two crashes so far that required me to turn the computer off and on. These were probably avoidable, I'm not totally comfortable with MacOSX yet.

I exported Windows Netscape address book to an LDIF file which imported into MacOSX Address Book application without problem.

CPU meter was at maximum again, nothing was actually going on, the Finder had no windows active but was taking between 70% and 90% of CPU time and would not give up. Restarting the finder (from Force Quit) fixed it.

I tried using iPhoto to touch-up some wedding photos but found it next to useless.

It can sometimes get a little confusing when you accidentally click just outside your application's window and the menu bar a the top changes. It then means you have to click in your application's window again before doing what you wanted to do. And when you have a few applications open at once it can be fun!

The screen is great, I cannot get enough of looking at the screen (when I'm still supposed to be doing my work on the Thinkpad T40p!).

The Applekey+TAB application switcher is beautiful, large clear icons overlayed on top of everything else. Makes me want to use Apple+TAB to actually switch applications, something I hated doing under Windows because ALT+TAB is not such a clear method due to it's tiny icons, you have to look carefully at what you're doing.
Another thing that you can do using Apple+TAB is quitting applications, just press Apple+TAB to highlight the application you want, then while still holding the Apple key press Q.

Good

  • Application switcher. Apple+TAB shows a great application switcher implementation.
  • Force Quit. This is sadly still needed today.
  • Application startup. This is almost instantaneous.

Bad

  • Occasional crash. This happens on every system, but it's still bad.
  • Force Quit. This should not be necessary today.
  • iPhoto. This is much more basic than I thought.
  • Not quite maximised. Sometimes confusing when clicking outside supposedly maximised applications.
